Vanilla almond granola clusters

We've crept into the time of year when the mornings are cold, the sun is slow to come up and quick to disappear, and the leaves crunch underfoot. Fall is my favorite season, and it holds many memories for me of football games, new semesters, fresh starts, moving new places, and meeting new people. It's funny how our minds are able to connect memories to a particular season.  This granola goes hand-in-hand with fall. It's sweet and subdued, crunchy and comforting. Feel free to adjust the sweetness to your liking. Replacing the honey with maple syrup would als[...]

Creamy green smoothie

Smoothies have become wildly popular in the past couple of years, and they can be wonderfully delicious with the right combination of ingredients. This smoothie is really tasty, and dropping in a big slice of creamy avocado takes it to a whole new level. It's dreamy, creamy, sweet, and makes for a quick, on-the-go breakfast or snack. Ancient grains granola

When I pass bags of granola on a grocery store shelf, I can't help but think: Somebody out there is making a killing by selling a little package of oats, oil, and sweeteners - ingredients that cost next to nothing - for $8. Making your own granola at home is super easy and allows you to choose the flavors in the final product. This recipe is incredibly simple to make, however, if you'd like to start with more straightforward ingredients and a sh[...]

Whole wheat everything mini bagels

One summer in college, I decided to try to master the whole wheat loaf of bread. Those of you with baking experience know what a pain whole wheat flour can be to work with, and there I was, having baked very few loaves of bread in my life, determined to figure out the secret to beautifully risen, free-form artisan boules without white flour. I tried many, many recipes many, many times, and most of my bread ended up looking like a mess. At least the end product of a failed-looking baking attempt still tastes good, and eventually, I did master whole whea[...]

Whole wheat banana bread

I sometimes see people get bummed out and judgmental toward themselves over emotional eating, but eating for comfort is not inherently a bad thing. When we experience difficult emotions, there are many valid ways of coping, and if you make a choice to enjoy your favorite cheesy pasta or some warm-from-the-oven banana bread, you might legitimately feel better and there is nothing wrong with this. If, though, you have a shaky relationship with food and you experience guilt with eating things you enjoy, eating for comfort might make you feel worse.   This highli[...]
